Economic development does not always need to be complex and complicated. Sometimes it’s as simple as locals being determined to spend their dollars locally. Civic Push was involved in a project during the COVID-19 pandemic that exemplifies this. Community partners Destination Cleveland and Cleveland Neighborhood Progress joined forces to provide a boost to local food industry and restaurant partners, many of which were struggling during this time of economic slowdown. Knowing people were staying home, social distancing, and holding steep concerns for their health, an initiative was launched to support local businesses.
Civic Push served as a marketing partner for this popular #EatExploreCLE campaign. Cleveland’s community development corporations created safe, outdoor dining spaces stocked with tents, tables and chairs in city neighborhoods. Neighbors were encouraged to order carry-out locally and enjoy the safe spaces with their fellow residents. Neighborhood-based promotions, online marketing and a TV campaign kept the spotlight on local restaurants and brought the community together during challenging times. #EatExploreCLE was active throughout 2021.
CONTINUING THE EFFORT...
Civic Push President Jeff Kipp, along with colleagues and friends, kept the #EatExploreCLE efforts - and social media hashtag - alive by continuing the practice past ‘21 as a personal hobby. They have successfully maintained a once-monthly outing into city neighborhoods, enjoying a meal at a locally owned restaurant and then venturing out to explore the selected neighborhood on foot and experience it up close. This tradition has continued for five years, and by the end of 2025, their 50th #EatExploreCLE outing will take place.
See below for the neighborhoods explored and restaurants visited since 2021. This effort will undoubtedly continue, because it’s easy, it’s fun, and it makes a difference. Civic Push encourages residents and visitors alike to join in and keep spending dollars locally. The dining scene in Cleveland is exceptional, and our city’s reputation as a "foodie" destination continues to spread nationally.
#EatExploreCLE is a lunch meeting that everyone looks forward to. We’re proud to hit 50. Here’s to 50 more!
